So today I decided to do yet another in my Halloween series of tutorials. If you haven’t already seen them, check out my Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas and Creepy Clown tutorials. This week I decided to do a scary skull tutorial. This could be worn as part of a skeleton or a Grim Reaper costume. Anyway on with the tutorial.
Step 1: Use a dark brown eyeliner to outline where you are putting the black. I did this by feeling for the bones on my face and kind of tracing around the hollow points of my temple, cheekbones and chin. I over-exaggerated the hollows of my eyes as I wanted to cover my eyebrows without having to use glue stick.
Step 2: Use a pale foundation to colour in the parts of where will be the skull. I wanted to use a pale foundation as opposed to white face paint as I would be doing lots of shading and highlighting with a white.
Step 3: I used a white foundation to highlight areas of the skull, such as around the cheekbones, down the nose, on my chin and forehead and along where I would be drawing the teeth. Then I set it all with a loose translucent powder to make sure the skin was nice and matte.
Step 4: Fill in all the outlined parts with a black face paint or eyeliner. Make sure to pat some matte black eyeshadow over it to set everything in place.
Step 5: This should be two steps but I forgot to take pictures! Using eyeliner, draw a black line on the very inside of your lips. Then draw a line on either side of your mouth to connect to the black. Now draw in a bunch of teeth all in a straight line. I find the easiest way to start is at the center of your top and bottom lip and work your way out. Fill in the teeth with white. You can also black out some teeth. Then draw some lines with black eyeliner above and below the teeth as shown in the picture. Smudge them out a little with your finger or a brush.
Step 6: Use a black eyeshadow to add some shading to the face. I used a flat eyeshadow brush to apply the shadow in small amounts and then blended it out with my finger. I added some shading around the eyes, along the sides of the nose, on the chin and up into your forehead, as shown in the picture. I also drew a few wrinkle lines on the bridge of my nose. At this point I also added some white eyeshadow to the same highlight areas as before.
Step 7: Draw on some cracks onto the skull. I decided to do one on the forehead and chin. You can do this by drawing on some random lines with black eyeliner and then smudging out the outer edges with a brush or your finger.
And that’s it! I’m sorry if I didn't explain this one very well. It’s really hard to explain shading in a post! But it’s actually easy to do using your fingers. It doesn't have to be precise by any means. In order to complete the look I added a black hoody but I would suggest a long black robe to look like the Grim Reaper. Let me know what you think of this tutorial and if you’d like to see any other tutorials. To the comments!
Bye for now,
