So a while back I shared a huge haul of products that I got from Illamasqua, which you can check out here. Now that I've had some time to use the products on both myself and clients I am finally getting around to doing some reviews. First review is one of the products I was most excited about trying, and that is the Illamasqua Hydra Veil Rehydrating Gel.
Now I love a good primer. As a makeup artist a good primer is key to keeping makeup on all day, especially when working with brides or occasion makeup. So when I heard about the Illamasqua Hydra Veil Rehydration Gel I was excited.
It comes in a 30ml sized pot with a little spatula that hooks onto the lid for a more hygienic way for dishing out the product. The consistency of this product really amazes me. It is a gel/jelly like consistency that levels back out once you have removed some product. It’s a very small thing but I really like that. It means every time you open it up, you look like you have a brand new product!

But it is really how this product works that I love so much. I have seen it been described as a moisturiser but I disagree with that. It doesn’t appear to have long term moisturising abilities and I wouldn’t be using it every day in place of moisturiser. However what I would describe it as is a very moisturising primer. I can really understand why it is described as a rehydrating gel. When you take a tiny amount of it and put it on your face, you are expecting a silicone like primer. But instead you get a cooling and almost water-like gel that instantly rehydrates and moisturisers. It doesn’t feel greasy or heavy but instead dries very quickly into the skin. It works well on all skin types but amazingly on dry skin.

And then you have the primer side of things. This product works to hydrate the skin but also evens out your skin texture to make it easier to apply foundation on top of. I found foundation really blends quite easily over it. But what I was super impressed with is how much it adds to the longevity of your foundation. I have used this recently on two occasions. One was at a hen party for two people. I applied this at about 5pm and by 2am that night with lots of dancing and sweating, their foundation hadn’t budged. More recently I used it on an entire bridal party, including mother of the bride. I applied their makeup between 9am and 1pm and amazingly when they were going to bed that night at 5am, their foundation was still in place!! The only fault I have is that it doesn’t do much for oil control. I found I still needed a good blot powder to take down shine throughout the day and night. But if that doesn’t concern you too much then this could be the primer for you.

So that’s it for my review of the Illamasqua Hydra Veil Rehydrating Gel. It is an amazing product and one I know I will repurchase. I have tried quite a number of primers over the years but this has definitely become my number one choice of primer. It is a little spendy at £27 for a 30ml bottle but a little really does goes a long way. When you consider that you are only going to use a pea sized amount for your whole face, you can see how long this would last you. You can buy Illamasqua products on their website here.
